What is RSS

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is used to describe the technology used in creating feeds.

Help for RSS Feeds

Feeds, also known as RSS feeds, XML feeds, syndicated content, or web feeds, contain frequently updated content published by a website. They are usually used for news and blog websites, but are also used for distributing other types of digital content, including pictures, audio files, or video. Internet Explorer can discover and display feeds as you visit websites. You can also subscribe to feeds to automatically check for and download updates that you can view later.

How to subscribe to RSS Feeds:

In order to subscribe to an RSS feed or newsfeed you will need two things, an RSS reader (also known as a news aggregator) and url (web address) of the RSS feed that you wish to subscribe.

  1. Download a News Aggregator / RSS Reader

  1. Locate the web address (url) of the RSS feed (XML file) that you wish to subscribe. A news aggregator or RSS reader is a software application that collects and displays news headlines and summaries from sources that you have designated. An RSS feed is an XML document that contains the news headlines and summaries.
  2. Install the feed reader or news aggregator on the computer
  3. Insert the url of the news feed (there is usually an "add feed" button)
  4. Many of the news readers will allow you to set the interval that the software will look for a feed update others simply update daily.
  5. The information in the feed will be updated when the feed contains new content.

Discover a Feed using internet Explorer 7 (won't work with 6)

Internet Explorer (IE7) looks for feeds, also known as RSS feeds, on every webpage you visit. When it finds available feeds, the Feeds button, located on the Internet Explorer toolbar, will change from gray to orange and it will play a sound.

To view available feeds:

On the Internet Explorer toolbar, click the Feeds button.

If multiple feeds are available, you'll see a list of available feeds. Select the feed you want to view.

When you click the feed, you'll see a page displaying a list of items (topics and articles) you can read and subscribe to.

To Subscribe to a Feed using IE7

Go to the webpage that has the feed to which you want to subscribe.

Click the Feeds button to discover feeds on the webpage.

Click a feed (if more than one is available). If only one feed is available, you will go directly to that page.

Click the Subscribe to this Feed button , and then click Subscribe to this Feed.

Type a name for the feed and select the folder to create the feed in.

Click Subscribe.

To view your subscribed feeds, click the Favorites Center button , and then click Feeds.
